Detroit Mercy has a Help Desk that is located in Student Union 013.  Support is made available to students by contacting the Help Desk by phone at (313) 993-1500 or online by e-mailing helpdesk@udmercy.edu or by submitting a ticket through the Help Desk ticket system at .  Please contact the Help Desk for any questions regarding the Tablet/Notebook program.

    Acquisition Information

If looking to acquire products, Detroit Mercy students have been extended educational benefits as noted on the following page.  Please do due diligence to verify that this is the best deal possible.  All transactions are between the student and the vendor.  Detroit Mercy has no part in the transaction.

    Software Notes

The ITS department recommends acquiring software when needed instead of purchasing all at the beginning.  This approach ensures that the student purchases the most recently available version and ensures that the student does not purchase something that may not be used.

    AutoDesk License

Students requiring software or license codes to operate AutoCAD or other Autodesk solutions are to register on the site.  Downloadable programs, serial codes and a learning community of users are available on the site.

Microsoft Development Products for Computer Information Systems or Computer Science Students (ONLY!)

Students learning development within the Computer Information Systems or Computer Science programs will receive access to download certain Microsoft development tools through Microsoft Imagine.  When taking a course that requires software, the instructor will work with the ITS department and an e-mail will be sent to each student with details for downloading software.  The instructor will initiate the request on behalf of the entire class at the appropriate time.  The ITS department cannot provide advance access.

    2019-2020 Academic Year Tablet/Notebook Recommendations

The ÂÜÀòÊÓƵ has a formal tablet program in place for all incoming School of Dentistry students.  For more information on the School of Dentistry program, please visit the Dental Tablet PC page.

The ÂÜÀòÊÓƵ has recommendations (not requirements) for incoming students based on the various academic programs.

Across all programs, it is recommended that students have access to a notebook or tablet computer to support their studies.  WiFi is generously available in all academic locations on all campuses and limited in other locations such as the libraries, residence halls, Calihan Hall, games room, dining rooms, Titan Fit Zone, Grounds and many green spaces.  Although WiFi is very convenient, ITS recommends resident students use a network cable for a hard-wired connection within resident rooms to obtain the fastest possible speeds available.

*Architecture Students who elect to use an Apple notebook will need to acquire Parallels Desktop for Mac to operate Windows based applications starting in their second year of studies.  In addition to acquiring Parallels, the student will also be required to obtain a Windows operating retail license to legally and ethically run the Windows operating system through the Parallels Desktop software.

*Digital Media Studies and Engineering students may wish to consider a larger size screen with a graphics hardware 3D Video Card (AMD, Intel or NVIDIA) due to the nature of their work.

Detroit Mercy has a Help Desk that is located in Student Union 013.  Support is made available to students by contacting the Help Desk by phone at (313) 993-1500 or online by e-mailing helpdesk@udmercy.edu or by submitting a ticket through the Help Desk ticket system at for an account).

2012-2013 Academic Year Engineering 100th Year Notebook Program

    Distribution

Notebooks will be distributed during PTV at the end of August after attending the orientation session.  These units have been donated to the incoming class by the College of Engineering Alumni for the educational benefit of students during their time at Detroit Mercy.

Any upgrades or desired enhancements need to take place after receiving the equipment.

    Software

The units will be preinstalled with the Microsoft Office 2010 Professional Suite, McAfee Antivirus, Visual C++, and Maple.  In addition, the free AutoCAD student download will be pre-downloaded to the system and may be run to install the application.  During this installation, the student will be required to create an AutoCAD account.

No media is provided but during the student's use of the equipment while at Detroit Mercy, ITS will reimage the unit by request.  Should the unit require reimaging, ITS will restore it back to the original settings.  Any additional software or desired customizations will need to be added after re-imaging has been completed.

    File Storage & Backup

It is ITS’ recommendation that students store information and copies of information in multiple locations.  Many people now use the free versions of Microsoft OneDrive, Dropbox, SpiderOak, Google Drive, DriveHQ, etc. and we would encourage that students have files available stored locally as well as in the cloud, as part of the student's responsible use.

The T430 comes with USB ports and backup to a local hard drive or USB stick is a good idea as well.

    Hardware Repair

All of the units come with 4 years of Accidental Damage Protection (ADP).  Service requests should be made directly to Lenovo by calling 1-866-968-4465.  The ITS Help Desk is available to address issues with the unit but will defer to Lenovo support for hardware issues.

Accidental Damage does not cover loss or theft.  Homeowner’s or renter's insurance should be adjusted to cover this unit.

    Support

General support is available through the Help Desk.  The Help Desk may be reached at (313) 993-1500 or by submitting a Help Desk ticket into .

    Early Termination

Should a student change majors outside of the Engineering program or leave Detroit Mercy prior to completing the degree, the University will charge the student's account the pro-rated remaining balance of the unit based on 16 terms of use.

2010-2011 Academic Year Tablet/Notebook Program Information

The ÂÜÀòÊÓƵ recommends that all incoming freshman have access to a notebook or tablet computer to support their studies.  Several programs have recommendations to assist in the acquisition of a system to best support a specific major.

Many (but not all) of the recommended applications are available free through educational agreements or University licensing.  Please see the instructions section for acquisition details for each product.  Due to distribution requirements, the costs per commercial applications may not be listed online but are available by calling the Help Desk at (313) 993-1500 or stopping by the Help Desk in Student Union 013.

    Detroit Mercy's Program's Uniqueness

Detroit Mercy's Tablet/Notebook program provides a new and fresh approach that allows students to purchase their own computer of choice from the vendor of their choice.  Detroit Mercy simply recommends that students purchase to a minimum specification so that they will have a system that will last throughout the duration of their studies.  If the student already owns a portable computer that meets the minimum specification, the student does not need to purchase another computer.  By being the sole owner of the unit, the student has the privilege of customizing the unit to his/her personal needs and refreshing it on his/her own timetable.

The School of Dentistry operates slightly different to this approach and students attending the School of Dentistry can find more information at .
